First Parish Collaborates with
Organic Growers!

We are pleased to announce that we are collaborating with local produce growers, and the Green Artists League, to create an organic “Garden of Eden” to be shared with the greater Newbury/Newburyport community.

First Parish became an early member of Newburyport’s environmental group S.E.E.D for the purpose of collaborating with others to raise environmental awareness. To honor S.E.E.D.’s call for organic “Victory Gardens”, First Parish is offering a dozen 10’ x 15’ community gardens to the public for a fee of $25 for the growing season. Community gardeners are also required to use organic garden practices and pay for their share of water usage. The plots will be tilled and ready to use. Applications are now being taken for the twelve garden plots.

First Parish is pleased to announce it is a partner in Community Supported Agriculture by hosting The Greater Newburyport CSA. In Community Supported Agriculture, a farm partners with a community of supporters who cover a farm’s yearly operating budget by purchasing a share of the season’s harvest. The Greater Newburyport CSA is currently accepting new “charter” members for the 2008 growing season. Each week shareholders will be invited to select their produce from bins brimming with freshly harvested produce grown using only organic, sustainable methods. Shareholders will also be invited to pick their own herbs, flowers, and vegetables in the CSA garden in the back of First Parish Church.

First Parish has asked the Green Artists League, a collective of artists dedicated to raising environmental awareness, to collaborate with the church and the Victory and CSA gardeners. The Green Artists’ “Eden Project” will work with the FPC and the garden community on a number of green art initiatives that will include environmental educational outreach and art projects to transform the field in back of First Parish Church into an Organic Garden of Eden.
